MAC Fall Season Wrap-Up

It's never a surprise to see Kent State's John Hahn atop the MAC's leaderboards. The real surprise of the Fall golf season was the number of teammates joining Hahn, as three Kent State golfers were named MAC Golfer of the Week.

Sophomore Mackenzie Hughes and junior Brett Cairns each captured the weekly honor, in addition Hahn, the 2009 Western Am Champion. Hahn was named the conference's Golfer of the Week after third place finish in the David Toms Invitaitonal. His seven-under 206 marked the third three-round sub-par finish of his career. He was honored a week before after a 10th place team finish at the Bank of Tennessee Classic.

Hughes captured the conference honor after tying for 12th place in the highly competitive PING/Golfweek Preview, featuring some of the top teams in the nation.

Cairns rounded out the Golden Flash trio after taking Medalist honors in the Windon Memorial Classic, a tournament in which KSU captured a third place finish.

Bowling Green featured a pair of conference honorees as well as Matt Schneider's individual championship helped the Falcons to a tie for the team title in the John Piper Intercollegiate.

His teammate Drew Preston also wrapped-up a solid week with a conference honor as he set the BGSU 36-hole all-time record en route to a Medalist finish at the Earl Yestingmeier Intercollegiate. He fired a 65-67 in the opening rounds before falling two strokes shy of the 54-hole record at the University. Still, the junior walked away with Medalist honors.

But it wasn't just the Flashes and Falcons with top performers. Miami's Nathan Sutherland ran away with both the Golfer of the Week award and the Bearcat Invitational title as his six-under was seven strokes ahead of the pack.

Slipping under the radar a bit was Akron junior Lucas Murray. The transfer from Division III Mount Union College wrapped up the Fall season with the conference's best 18-hole average at an astounding 71.69. He also captured the Golfer of the Week award after finishing second at the Hummingbird Classic.

The MAC season will resume in the Spring, as many of the top contenders will kick off the season with March trips south.
