Ohio Schools Look Out of State on NLI Day

It's the day that every young golfer in Ohio dreams of - the day they sign the college scholarship papers. For many Ohioans, this week's early signing period left the ink dry in the well as some of the state's top schools went out of state for their 2010 talent.

The following schools made National Letter of Intent signings during the NCAA's Fall Signing Period.

AKRON: The Zips signed just one in the early period, but that one will be looked to for contributions right away. Drew Czuchry of Auburn, Ga. was the lone new Zip, but the two-time Player of the Year on Georgia's PGA Junior Tour will be a good one for coach Nick Goetze. Czuchry is currently ranked 44th in the Class of 2010.

MIAMI: The RedHawks, looked North during the early signing period, bringing in Canadians Austin Kelly (Chatham, Ontario) and Michael Lancaster (Ancaster, Ontario). Coach Casey Lubahn will look to the imports immediately as the RedHawks has four seniors on the way out this season. Kelly was a member of Team Canada at the CJGA International junior Challenge and was a three-time MVP for the provincial champions.

Lancaster is the 11th ranked player in Ontario with a handful of junior and school tournaments to his name.

KENT STATE: Herb Page went North for his 2010 talent as well, signing Corey Conners (Listowell, Ontario) and Taylor Pendrith (Richmond Hill, Ontario) to National Letters of Intent. The duo are two of the most highly regarded Canadian prospects. Conners is one of just four Canadians on the National Junior team and will soon represent his country at events in Mexico and Japan. Also a straight-A student, Conners has made a number of big showings at events in the United States.

Pendrith is the possibly the biggest of Big Guns in the Class of 2010. The runner-up in the Mizuno National Golf Championship also won the Canadian Junior Long Drive Championship. His winning 349-yard blast was tracked at 190 mph off the club - 10 mph faster than a Tiger Woods drive if you're curious.

OHIO STATE: The Buckeyes and new coach Donnie Darr landed two recruits in the early signing period. James Sullivan, a native of Katy, Texas, checks in at 302 in the National Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings while soon-to-be classmate Logan Jones of Dublin, Ohio checks in two spots ahead at 300.

CLEVELAND STATE: The Vikings stayed in-state, and in-city, with the signings of Andrew Bailey and Brendan Byrne. Bailey, a native Rocky River, helped guide St. Ignatius to back-to-back 3rd place finishes in the OHSAA Division I championship with his 75.0 average. Byrne, a Strongsville native, was a three-time team MVP guiding the Mustangs to a 14-0 record his senior season.

BOWLING GREEN: One of the biggest in-state signings came from the Northwest as the Falcons landed Jackson Ironman Morgan Dobbins. Dobbins, the second ranked player in the state, recently won the Division II State Championship and will join an up-and-coming BGSU squad in the Fall of 2010.

XAVIER: The Musketeers made a solid signing with the addition of Las Vegas, Nev. native Yuki Kato. He'll come to Cincinnati the 152nd ranked player by NJGS.

OLE MISS: As the name suggests, absolutely not an Ohio school, but the Runnin' Rebs ran away with Ohio's top ranked NJGS players in Kyle Kmiecik. Kmiecik, a native of Avon, will head to Oxford in the Fall of 2010.

PENN STATE: The Nittany Lions swooped into Buckeye territory to steal away Shane Stewart of Dublin. Stewart, currently ranked 54th in the NJGS will ditch his home town team for Happy Valley.
