Xavier men finish fifth at USF Invitational
Written by Mike Garabedian
Xavier University represented Ohio well in Florida this weekend and almost pulled off a great comeback.
After shooting four-under on Saturday to pull within six strokes of the lead, the Xavier men's golf team could not rally again on Sunday as they finished the Ron Smith/USF Invitational in fifth place.
The Musketeers shot two-over-par (290) on Sunday as a team and ended the tournament at one-over (865) for the tournament, 13 strokes back of tournament champion Florida Southern College and one stroke back of fourth place South Alabama.
Herbert Day and Sebastian MacLean led Xavier in Sunday's final round, shooting one-under and even-par, respectively. Both golfers finished at one-over for the three-round tournament. Alan Glynn (one-over on Sunday, three-under for the tournament) and Kieran Lovelock (two-over on Sunday, three-over for the tournament) both posted solid final round scores for the Musketeers, who will next compete at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., on Mar. 18-20. Individually, Glynn finished tied for eighth overall.
As for Cincinnati, the other Ohio school participating in the three-day tournament from Dade City, Fla., they finished Sunday's round at 21-over-par (46-over for the tournament) and in second-to-last place (22nd). They will next be in action on Mar. 12 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
Tournament champion Florida Southern (-12) won by five strokes over Middle Tennessee State (-7). The University of North Florida finished in third place, at four-over-par.
