Blake Furgerson wins 2008 Northeast Ohio Amateur
NOGA Tournament may be jump start to great Summer of 2008
6/30/08 Medina-Blake Furgerson is full of confidence and is in the midst of one of his best ever stretches of golf. Furgerson knew after the first 36 holes of the NE Ohio Am. he would have to put two strong rounds together to have a chance at victory. After the morning flight was complete, the John Carroll student, had pulled into a three-way tie for the lead. By the time he began his final nine holes of the event it was all but over. A nasty triple bogey on the 12th made things interesting but 3 birdies over the last four holes ensured this year's trophy would head to Quail Hollow, Blake's home course. Video interviews are available from this event on our homepage, below our main video player.

Mike Kelley wins another Ohio Mid-Am
Win makes stand-out amateur rethink Summer plans
6/11/08 When Mike Kelley won the Coshocton Invitational it was a repeat win and a sign of things to come. Kelley made a clutch downhill birdie putt on the 34th hole of the Ohio Mid-Am today at Worthington Hills CC to earn another repeat victory. Ultimately, Kelley won by two strokes over Jeff Scohy to claim his second Mid-Am title but standing on 16 tee the two were tied after Kelley had squandered several strokes over holes 10-15. Ohio's Golf has exclusive video interviews with the Kelley and Scohy, found on our homepage. Kelley has taken a comanding lead in the statewide amateur rankings, having won both tournaments he has entered. Click for rankings.

Bastel withdraws again on LPGA Tour
2007 DURAMED Futures Tour money winner pulls out of McDonalds
6/8/08 Emily Bastel, first round leader of the 2008 LPGA Championship, withdrew after making the cut through the second round. Bastel has suffered several withdrawls this season in March, April and now June. The month of May saw Bastel make four consecutive cuts and earn over $35,000. After shooting 66 in round one Bastel explained that she was not feeling well and her poor health increased her focus on the golf.
Josh Anderson leads Franklin County Amateur
Ohio golf sees new face in second place Yebamber Adhikari
6/7/08 Hosted at Thorn Apple Country Club since it's inception, the Franklin County Amateur is the first "biggie" of the year and the defending champion, Doug Lockwood (75), is within striking distance of the leaders. Josh Anderson leads the event after shooting 71 on the mature Thorn Apple property. The most surprizing result of the day (absent Big Brown) is the solid play of the second place Yebamber Adhikari. Big Y is new to the golf scene in Ohio and a welcomed addition. Elsewhere in Ohio, the Amateur Golf Tour played round one of their Masters tournament at Eaglesticks in Ohio. Randy Wachtel leads the event after shooting 1 over, 71. Wachtel told Ohio 's Golf that he double bogied 17 and bogied 18 to miss breaking 70 for the first time in his golf history. Chasing Wachtel are several players including Todd Barnes, John Fryman, Jeff Maier, Troy Boswell and Tony Burbridge. Wrap-up videos from day one of the event can be seen below and tomorrow this website will post video interviews from the final round of the Franklin County Amateur.
Ohio's Emily Bastel leads LPGA major McDonalds
Upper Sandusky resident goes low under the weather
6/5/08 Emily Bastel played her best round of the 2008 season at the McDonalds LPGA Championship. Bastel hit every fairway, 15 greens and had no bogies to shoot 33-33--66. Bastel was the leading money winner last year on the DURAMED Futures Tour. She grew up at Lincoln Hills Golf Course in Upper Sandusky and graduated from Michigan St. Here's a look at her post round interview: DANA GROSS-RHODE: Let's go over your scorecard first.
EMILY BASTEL: It was like 150 and hit a 6-iron to a foot.
6, 145, 7-iron to 18 feet.
8, was a gap wedge from 92 yards to eight feet.
13, 7-wood to 12 feet.
16, gap wedge from 98 to six feet.
18 was a 24-degree hybrid to probably 12 feet from 178 out.
DANA GRASSRHODE: As we get started, last year you were at the top of the Duramed FUTURES Tour and that gave you your exempt status and now in your first major of the year you've just shot a 66. Can you talk about what's going through your mind and thoughts for tomorrow?
EMILY BASTEL: I'm very excited and I'm actually a little bit under the weather if you can tell by my voice. I think that helped me to just kind of stay patient out there. I was trying to just get through the round as much as anything. But it's very exciting and just try to make the most of it this week.
Q. What's the course playing like out there today?
EMILY BASTEL: It's very, very wet, and in the same sense, the rough is long. I was fortunate, I think I hit every fairway today, maybe just missed one.
So if you can keep it in the fairway with us playing lift, clean and place, you can still find good lies out there, and be hitting a clean ball into the greens. And with it being so moist, the greens are receptive. So I had some good yardages today and was able to kind of throw it at the stick a couple of times.
Q. Did you find it hard to keep your composure as the round went on? Were you getting excited or were you able to kind of stay focused?
EMILY BASTEL: I was actually surprisingly calm. I can't say that it will be like that all week. But today I felt pretty calm. Like I said, I feel so lousy that it was like I was more worried about that than anything else.
You know, sometimes I guess that can be a blessing in disguise.
Q. What's your ailment?
EMILY BASTEL: I guess it's a cold. It's been kind of in my chest and my throat. A couple of times today I was embarrassed. I couldn't stop coughing. I had like these coughing fits.
DANA GROSS-RHODE: What do you feel is the strongest part of your game right now, and is this year different knowing you have exempt status?
EMILY BASTEL: Well, I've actually been lucky that every year I've been out here, I've had exempt status, and the years I haven't, I haven't had any status, which has made it easy to decide where I was going to play.
But you know, it's exciting to have this happen, and you know, early in the week, just try to enjoy it and keep it going.
Q. You said it's pretty wet out there. I guess if it doesn't drop any rain, the greens will get harder and it might get a little tougher out there. How big was it go out and post a low number to get started?
EMILY BASTEL: Yeah, it's always good to get off to a good start, and, you know, if for no other reason than just to have a little confidence for the rest of the week. And I'm sure it will keep drying out. I have a hard time believing that it's going to be firm by the end of the week; however, you know, I'm not familiar with this course or how it handles water.
Q. By the stats that I was looking at, it seems that you are not very long off the tee relatively speaking. The softness of the fairways, does this work against you not having as much carry?
EMILY BASTEL: I think it probably does work against me, but it works against everybody. You know, I mean, if I'm hitting it ten shorter because of the wetness, so is everybody else most likely.
So you know, the golf course does play long for me overall, but like I said, I felt confident with my longer clubs, my hybrids, and I've been working on those to kind of turn those into scoring clubs for me, because I kind myself at longer distances into greens sometimes.
Q. Just being able to go out there and post before a lot of the other contenders are able to do anything, does that help at all to be out there real early?
EMILY BASTEL: You know, I'm not sure. I think one great thing about when it's this wet or going early, is especially on the front, we had really nice greens. They weren't tracked up at all. They were real smooth.
But you know, with having a morning or afternoon time each day, it all kind of evens itself out. But it's nice to have today over with and be able to relax a little before tomorrow. Hopefully I'll probably take a nap this afternoon and be able to sleep in tomorrow and kind of help me get over this cold so I have some energy left by the end of the week.
Q. Do you think that 6-under will hold up as the leader for today?
EMILY BASTEL: It's really hard to say. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't just because the greens are so receptive. And there are some pins out there that are green-light pins as far as scoring goes, so it's tough to say.
DANA GRASSRHODE: Thank you very much, Emily, for coming in.

Scores from the Columbus US Open qualifier are delayed
Server crash has pros pacing with anxiety
6/2/08 7:11PM COLUMBUS, Ohio – We know Robert Garrigus and Carl Petterson are good to go for the US Open but many pros are complaining about pin placements at Scarlet and not knowing their score placing as the USGA server has crashed delaying scores being posted from Brookside to the HQ at the Scarlet course at Ohio St. 23 players will qualify from Scarlet with two alternate spots also up for grabs...more to follow.
NCAA’s winningest active coach stepping down as Men's Coach of the Buckeyes
Coach will complete 2009 season
6/2/08 COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jim Brown, head coach of the Ohio State men’s golf team, is retiring at the end of the 2008-09 season, he and Gene Smith, Ohio State Director of Athletics, announced Monday. Brown, a 1966 Ohio State graduate, will coach his 36th season of Buckeye golf next season.
“I’ve been thinking about it the last few years,” Brown said. “I’ll be 65 years old and this will be my 42nd year as a coach and now is the time. I wanted to leave while the program was on the upswing. We had a good season and will be even better next year after gaining experience. I am excited to coach next year and watch the team play. I felt like it was the right time. I am grateful for my time here – I couldn’t ask for a better career at a better place. To be associated with this university, this team and Scarlet Course, it’s all been a dream come true.
“I would like to thank everyone who has helped build the program. All the athletics directors I have worked with have given me great resources and backing to make this program competitive, both in the Big Ten and the national scene. I also would like to thank all of the donors for endowing scholarships and the support of our Fairway Club, as well as the Phipps family for their support of the restoration of the Scarlet Course. For the players who chose to come to Ohio State, they are a special group and belong to a special fraternity. I want to thank those who chose to become Buckeyes and helped build and add to our golf tradition.”
“Jim Brown is a hall of fame coach,” Smith said. “He has touched the lives of hundreds and hundreds of Buckeye athletes. We are indebted to his services. Clearly, he is one of the best coaches in Ohio State history and we appreciate his commitment to being a Buckeye.”
Brown, a native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, has served as the head coach for the Buckeyes since 1974. He is currently the winningest active coach in the NCAA with a career record of 5,609-1,791-43 and 157 tournament victories. In his 35 seasons, Brown has led the Buckeyes to 31 NCAA appearances, including the NCAA Central Regional in 2008, and 11 Top 10 NCAA championship finishes. The Buckeyes won the national championship, the second in program history, in 1979. It was the first NCAA title for a northern school in nearly two decades.
“One of the highlights [of my career] would be the 1979 team and winning the NCAA championship,” Brown said. “Those are hard to get, like holes in one. To win one is something special.”
Under his guidance, Ohio State has won a league-record 17 Big Ten championships. The Buckeyes won the conference crown every season from 1976-90, except for 1981 and ’88 when they were runners-up. He has produced 93 All-Big Ten honorees, including second-team selections Kyle Coconis and Bo Hoag in 2007-08.
Individually, Brown has tutored an NCAA individual champion in Clark Burroughs (1985), 18 Big Ten medalists, 11 First Team All-America selections and 40 other All-America honorees. Chris Perry was named College Player of the Year in 1984 and Chris Smith earned both Big Ten Freshman of the Year (1988) and Player of the Year (1990) awards under Brown.
Brown’s student-athletes also have excelled in the classroom. The Buckeyes have received 11 All-America Scholar awards, 55 Academic All-Big Ten honors and 84 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes nods since the inception of both awards in 1987.
“Our team’s graduation rate has been excellent,” Brown said. “I believe there have only been five players to not graduate in their years of eligibility. I’m as proud of that as any tournament wins. I’ve always stressed the need to get an education.”
As a coach, Brown was named National Coach of the Year in 1979 and ’86, and District IV Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons from 1977-80 and again from 1982-87. He has earned Big Ten Coach of the Year laurels three times in 1995, ’96 and 2004. Brown has been inducted into several halls of fame, including Ohio Golf Association (2006), Ohio State Athletics (1991), Golf Coaches Association of America (1989), Ohio High School Golf Coaches (1994) and Martins Ferry High School (1972).
During his time as a Buckeye student-athlete, Brown played the No. 1 position on the golf team from 1963-65, serving as captain his senior year, and also lettered three seasons with the Ohio State basketball team. He began his coaching career in 1967 at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., as head golf coach and assistant basketball coach. Brown then took the head golf coach position at Kent State from 1968-73 before returning as the head coach for the men’s golf team at his alma mater in 1974. “I have been a Buckeye my whole life and will continue to be one,” Brown said. “This job has been a dream come true. I have never come to work not excited to be here. It has been a labor of love. I have never felt like it was a job. It’s been exciting to be around the guys, they keep me young. To develop the guys and see how they succeed on the tours and in business, see pictures of their families, to have them call and check in. I’m proud of what they’ve done, here at Ohio State and after. I hope I’ve made a positive influence on their lives in someway.”
Kent State Finishes Sixth At NCAA Championship
Golden Flashes earn highest finish in school history
6/1/08 Validation. That is how Kent State Head Men’s Golf Coach Herb Page described his team’s performance this week at the 111th NCAA Championship. The Golden Flashes finished alone in sixth place to earn the highest finish in a program’s storied history. With a four round score of 52-over 1204 (301-297-302-304), KSU ended the tournament just 10 strokes back of national champion UCLA.
“This is something pretty special,” said Page, “It really validates what Kent State golf is all about. This is about as good as it can get.”
Freshman Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) led the team to a 304 on Saturday after making five birdies in his two-over round of 74. With KSU starting off hole 10 today, Cairns had a rough start making bogey on three of his first four holes before rolling in a birdie on the par four 15th. The Second Team All-MAC honoree would bogey two more holes on the back nine before finishing off with a par on No. 18. He then made his move after the turn with two straight birdies on No. 1 and 2. Standing at two-over on the day, Cairns recorded a double-bogey on No.3, but played the last six holes in two-under as he birdied No. 4 and No. 7. He moved up 18 spots on the field to finish tied for 43rd with a 19-over 307 (78-75-80-74).
“Hole No. 1 really got it started for me and then I fed off the momentum,” said Cairns, “I was just trying to hang in there and grind it out for the team.”
Shooting a team low nine-over 297 (80-76-76-73) senior David Markle (Shelbourne, Ontario / Centre Dufferin), finished tied for 10th overall giving him KSU second lowest individual performance in school history. Markle closed out his fantastic week and Golden Flash career with a three-over 75 this afternoon making 13 pars, including nine of the first 11 holes. After a bogey on No. 3 put him at three-over he gained a stroke back with his only birdie of the day on the par five fifth. Earning the highest finishing since current PGA Tour member Jon Mills took sixth in 2001, Markle would close out the day with pars on four of the final five holes.
“We were determined and focused all week and believed in ourselves,” said Markle, “It really hasn’t set in yet (on the team’s finish), it’s something we’ll have together forever.”
Sophomore David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire), and freshman John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson), capped off the scoring for KSU with rounds of 77 and 78 respectively, while senior Tom Ballinger (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) shot 81.
Ludlow became just the sixth KSU individual to finish in the top 25 as he finished tied for 23rd with a 15-over 303 (78-75-73-77). A First Team All-MAC selection, he had birdies on 13 and 1 and stood at just one over through 10 holes of play. Following a bogey on 2 and a double-bogey on four when the ball hit his club twice on a chip, he closed out the day with pars on four of the final five holes.
Hahn was plus-two after the first nine holes with his only miscue coming in the form of a double bogey on No. 14. He would run into trouble on the front nine with two straight bogeys following the turn before earning a stroke back by recording birdie on four. With the course playing tough all week, the MAC Golfer of the Year then posted three straight bogeys before back-to-back pars ended his round. Overall he tied for 33rd with a 17-over 305 (83-71-73-78).
Playing the final tournament of his collegiate career, Ballinger had 11 pars and a birdied No. 15, but was done in by a pair of triple bogeys on No 13 and No. 5. He placed tied for 73rd overall with a 29-over 317 (75-80-81-81).
“I’ve coached a long time and we’ve always had high expectations,” said Page, “This is a true testament to Kent State’s ‘Excellence In Action’. I’m thankful for (KSU Athletic Director Laing Kennedy) and the administration for allowing us to compete at this level and for our guys showing that we belong here.”
Kevin Chappell of UCLA shot a two-under 286 and claimed individual medalist honors by three stokes over Indiana’s Jorge Campillo and Washington’s Nick Taylor. On Sunday Chappell was one of four recipients of the Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Dillards Inc. and Harmarx Corp., which is given annually to the Collegiate Player of the Year in the NAIA, Div III, Div II and Div I.

One year after missing the cut at his hometown Memorial Tournament, former Dublin resident gets game going on the Nationwide Tour
5/29/08 Kyle Reifers has done some amazing things in his short professional golf career. He won the first two pro tournaments he ever played and passed Q school in his first attempt. Today on the Nationwide Tour in Illinois, Reifers had another first in his career. The former Demon Deacon eagled three of the four par fives at the Bank of America Open on The Glen Club golf course. Reifers ended up shooting 63 and currently leads by three strokes over Andrew Buckle and Brendon Todd.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever had any rounds before with three eagles,” said Reifers, who ended the day hitting eight of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation. “I wasn’t thinking about it. When you’re playing well, you aren’t thinking about that. It doesn’t really matter if it says par four or par five, you just add it up at the end of the day.”
A 244-yard hybrid finished 25 feet from the hole on the par-5 fifth hole, while a 5-iron from 209 yards on the par-5 14th hole rolled to within 20 feet of the cup. Another hybrid from 227 yards on the closing par-5 18th hole rested just 10 feet from the hole. Reifers drained all three putts to add his name to the record books.
“I played great all day,” said Reifers, a 24-year-old native of Dublin, OH. “I putted beautifully today and I was really excited with the way I finished the round.” ...Nationwide Tour contributed to this story.

Field is set for 33rd Memorial Tournament
Tournament takes a hit and loses Adam Scott .
5/24/08 The biggest field in the history of the Memorial Tournament has been set for the 2008 version of the northern Masters. Lots of familiar Ohio faces will be on hand to compete as well as 8 of the top ten players in the world. As expected, Tiger Woods will not play this year due to injury; what was not expected was the decision of Adam Scott to withdraw from the event. Who to watch: Paul Azinger, one of the most exciting wins in Memorial history. Woody Austin, with lots of water in Dublin you never know. Briny Baird, we don't get to see hats like that too often in Ohio, except for Little Brown Jug week. K.J. Choi, no repeat winners since El Tigre'. Fred Couples, has mellowed with age and gotten over Greg Norman stealing one from him in the snow. Will he ask Jack for Presidents Cup magic advice? Ben Curtis, perhaps a return home will jump start his season. David Duval, near the end of the line- oh how we miss his game. Ernie Els, the modern day Gary Player that we all love to root for. If it was up to us Ernie, you'd win in a four hole playoff. Steve Flesch, on the Ohio Golfer of the Year watch list. Jim Furyk, having met his wife at the Memorial, he's become somewhat of an adopted son in Dublin. Sergio Garcia, looking to validate the Players Championship. J.B. Holmes, awesome! FBR Champ looks to get it going again with the Spider in Buckeye state. Trevor Immelman, WAKE UP!. Anthony Kim, if you want to see the future of golf walk with Kim, he's the real deal. Frank Lickliter II, an outstanding cuts made percentage, just needs to get in the winners circle. Phil Mickelson, welcome back lefty. Stay healthy and focus on the course- not Torrey Pines, you'll be amazed at what a win on Jack's farm could do for you in the locker room. Jon Mills, a Kent St. grad looking to carry the flag for Coach Page. Sean O'Hair, another one of the 20's kids that is great to watch. Hey Mr. Finchem- put Sean and Kim in the world championships. Joe Ogilvie- looking to run the tour one day? Travis Perkins, local boy comes home and desperately needs a good check to get season on track. Kenny Perry, a former winner looking for "points" to punch his ticket for the Ryder Cup train. Bob Sowards, he's told us several times that's hard to learn so many course in a short amount of time. The former assistant pro at Muirfield has nothing to learn at this course- time to put up or.... Camilo Villegas, he's got a bit of Kournicova in him but he's still fun to watch. Boo Weekley, the best ball striker in the field. When he learns Nicklaus used to hunt the property he may just put away the clubs and get his rifle. Brett Wetterich, told us in Hawaii he'd be here. We say he's got a real chance to win.
Tiger Woods passes on the Memorial- confirmed
Woods website has conflicting info.
5/23/08 Throughout decision Friday the Tiger Woods website has shown the US Open as his next scheduled event. However, in the schedule section of the website the info shows "tbd", to be determined. It is believed he has chosen to wait to play his first tournament, after his latest knee surgery, at the US Open. The decision is a logical one. The terrain in Dublin, Ohio is fairly extreme and not the best of locations to test a newly repaired knee. Additionally, the 2008 US open is not at a traditional eastern or midwestern golf club. Played at Torrey Pines in California the grass, winds and time zone will all be drastically different than the players will experience in Ohio. A good call by Woods but one he could have announced several days ago.
Tiger Woods playing the Memorial?
Is it possible that Tiger does not know at 10AM, Friday?
5/23/08 As of 10am the Tiger Woods camp has not made public whether Tiger will tee it up at Jack's tournament in Dublin, Ohio. Perhaps Tiger did not know a week or even two days ago if he would play in the event. For anyone to believe he does not know currently, if he's playing, is unrealistic. Has Norad seen his private plane headed North? Does his favorite McDonalds in Ohio have his place setting prepared? At the end of the day The Memorial does not need Tiger. Already 9 of the top 10 in world have committed to play, including a hot Garcia and Mickelson. Good luck to Tiger if he shows, but his handlers need to learn the show goes on with or without him. For them to hold the Memorial hostage on making the announcement is out of line and they should reconsider these types of actions in the future.
Third US Open qualifier in Ohio goes to O.T.
Second day will finish up for three players looking for 1 spot.
5/19/08 Cincinnati, Ohio — The largest US Open qualifier in the country was played in Cincinnati yesterday at Maketewa CC. 169 players worked for eleven spots and after a long day filled with rain and a 45-minute medical delay, not all has been decided. Of note- Kevin Hall finished a long 36 hours as the medalist at the event, earning him a place in the sectional qualifier. Hall finished last at the Nationwide event in South Carolina on Sunday and drove all night to Cincinnati for an early morning tee time at Maketewa. While finishing last seems to be a disappointment it does mean that Hall made the cut and a check. This was his first made cut in a Nationwide since 2006.
